O Level Results Out; Pass Rate Edges Higher

Zimbabwe’s Ordinary Level results were dispatched yesterday with more pupils passing than the year before.

While the 20.72% pass-rate remains low it is higher than than the 18.4% of 2012.

Key stats are:

  •  285 260 ‘O’ Level candidates compared to 268 854 in 2012
  • Of the 173 856 who sat for 5 subjects or more,  36 031 scored a C or better.
  • 16 084 were female and 23 837 were male.
  • Monte Casino High School, Anderson Secondary School, John Tallach, Nyanga High, St Ignatius, ZRP High School, Nyazura Adventist High, Regina Mundi Secondary, St Dominics (Chishawasha) and Kriste Mambo had the best performers.

Zimbabwe’s education system took a battering during a crazy period in the 2000s and has started turning around again. It is however being threatened by the possibility of the Basic Education Assistance Module disappearing for good meaning that a million pupils could fail to go to school.

Government has said it is committed to improving access to basic education.
