A report that controversial Harare businessman Wicknell Chivayo has made an unexpected and truly altruistic gesture has made us feel all puppy dog eyes (better yet kitten eyes) fuzzy inside.
The Herald says he has bought tickets for the 32 Zimbabwean women stranded in Kuwait where they had been taken to on the ruse that they were going to get jobs as maids only to be traded as sex slaves.
Chivayo dipped into his pocket and released $58,900 to rescue the women. You can say what you want to say, but this is a beautiful gesture.
While it will do little in the fight against human trafficking, an industry worth $32 billion according to Havoscope, the difference it will make for those 32 individuals, their families, friends and everyone else concerned is immense. Every so often in fighting the big story we forget that there are real human beings involved, with real feelings and proper emotions.
We are talking about people being sold into modern-day slavery for as little as $2 in countries like Mozambique.
It’s sickening, but for now, we must celebrate this gesture from Mr Chivayo.
