King still in the country – eSwatini

eSwatini’s government has denied that its King Mswati III has fled the country.

Overnight reports suggested the absolute monarch had done a runner, in response to mass protests in he country.

Acting Prime Minister Themba Masuku, said in a statement: “ I would like to take this opportunity to assure emaSwati and the international community that His Majesty King Mswati is in the country and continues to lead in working with Government to advance the Kingdom’s goals.

“Government will update the nation on interventions on the current situation as the day progresses.”

Eyewitnesses say that soldiers have taken control of the capital, Mbabane.

Protestors have been calling for a cocktail of political reforms, including elections for a Prime Minister.
