Kasukuwere confirms he is running for President

Saviour Kasukuwere

Exiled former Minister Saviour Kasukuwere is taking a deep-dive into politics after announcing his intention to run for President in elections set for 23 August this year.

It comes full circled for ambitious former Zanu-Pf member who ex-President Robert Mugabe said harboured ambitions of taking the top job, inspired by the election of Barack Obama as the leader of the US in his forties.

It was in this context that he was believed to be among the leaders of G40 faction of the party. They lost out to President Emmerson Mnaangagwa’s side after military intervention in 2017.

Kasukuwere has been living in exile since then.

Asked by BBC reporter Shingi Nyoka on whether he would be returning to Zimbabwe to run for president, Kasukuwere said, “Yes Shingi, Zimbabwe is home and my country.”.

Responding to SABC’s Sophie Mokoena, Kasukuwere said, “Sophie good morning. The call has been made and yes I will be making a formal statement on my candidature. Thank you for asking.”

The reaction has been mixed. Supporters of the main opposition CCC led by Nelson Chamisa believe Kasukuwere will take votes away from Mnangagwa. Still others from that camp were wary of him because of a track record they feel is not in line with their values.

Some among Zanu-PF believe he will split the opposition vote.

It will be a test for Kasukuwere, who was a political heavyweight. Some feel he still holds sway among disaffected members of Zanu-Pf. They are significant. While the party won a majority north of two-thirds in the 2018 elections, the president barely scraped by.
