So the world famous Kariba Dam is at very real risk of collapsing according to engineers.
As many as 3.5 million people in the southern African region could be affected by the impending disaster if true. This is not to mention the power crisis that would be created if we could not get electricity from the dam.
The Zambians are taking it seriously and via the Daily Mail, Felix Nkulukusa, chairperson of an intergovernmental committee mobilizing funds for the repair of the dam, was quoted as saying:
We are told by engineers that if nothing is done in the next three years, the dam may be swept away
Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Water and Climate Saviour Kusukuwere says there is nothing to be too alarmed about saying repairs are taking place and there was no risk of the bank collapse.
Nkulukusa insists there is risk and US$250 million is needed to repair the dam. He says the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the European Union have agreed in principle to fund the repairs.
So who do we believe?
