President Malam Bacai Sanha, who took over the presidency of the tiny republic of Guinea Bissau two years ago after its previous leader was assassinated has died in Paris, the country’s national radio reports.
It is reported that he had ‘advanced diabetes’ and a hemoglobin problem.
The tiny state has been beset by multiple coups since independence from Portugal in 1974. Sanha won an election in 2009 in a rare peaceful transfer of power.
Our thoughts are with the 1.6 million people of Guinea Bissau.
