Government nixes Independence break for boarders

The Zimbabwe government has told boarders they cannot go home for the long Independence weekend.

This is as part of efforts to make sure students do not get infected with Covid-19 by going home.

Monday 19 April 2021 will be a holiday. This is because the 18th, which is Independence Day falls on a Sunday, meaning the the Monday becomes a public holiday.

The directive follows a similar one during the recent Easter holidays.

It also comes on the back of multiple students from Sacred Heart Girls High contracting the the respiratory disease.

Zimbabwe started its school calendar two months later than usual. The education system now finds itself under pressure to deliver an education calendar in 2021, after 2020 was wiped out for the most.

Recently, the government was forced to suspend Zimbabwe Examination Council (Zimsec) June examinations for Ordinary and Advanced Level as entrants would not have been ready to sit.
