Dumiso Dabengwa has died

Liberation struggle stalwart Dumiso Dabengwa has died.

Dumiso Dabengwa

He passed away in Nairobi, Kenya on his way from receiving treatment from India. They had stopped there to catch connecting flights.

Dabengwa, who was 79, served as the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (Zipra), the military wing of the Joshua Nkomo-led Zimbabwe African People’s Union (Zapu).

After independence, in 1980, he was detained for years by the government of then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe until a Unity Accord was signed between the government and Zapu.

He would later serve as Home Affairs Minister from 1992 to 2000. In that time he also served as chairperson of the Matebeleland Zambezi Water Project.

After leaving government he served as in the Zanu PF politburo before he quit in 2008 to revive Zapu for which he ran as president.

He was a fierce critic of then President Mugabe and the late opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

May his soul rest in peace.
