Covid-19 vaccine will be voluntary, says Government, but what could that mean?

Zimbabwe’s government has said that the Covid-19 vaccine will not be forced on anyone and will be voluntary.

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said:

The vaccination is going to be voluntary. Let me underscore that my Ministry is doing everything possible to ensure that our citizens are safe from possible side effects of some COVID 19 vaccines, currently on the shelf.

Zimbabwe says it is looking at how other countries are handling vaccine distribution and will do so itself it after ‘technical and administrative obligations are met’.

The worry on the use of the term ‘voluntary’ makes one wonder if there will be a punitive cost to the vaccine like there is for Covid-19 testing in Zimbabwe at the moment.

With the government having given out very little information over the vaccine, one can only speculate.

Zimbabwe is currently under a 30-day lockdown with curfews and stay-at-home orders.
