8 people injured, property damaged in Barbourfields violence – ZRP

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced that people were injured in the violence following a pitch invasion by Highlanders fans in their match against Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday.

The invasions caused the match to be abandoned.

“Preliminary investigations have established that four (04) police officers and four (04) members of the public were injured during the pitch invasion and subsequent violence which erupted inside the stadium,” cops said in a statement.

“Three (03) Police vehicles were stoned and damaged by the soccer hooligans,” they continued.

On the decision not to use tear gas to quell the disturbances, the police said, “This strategy assisted to avoid stampede, fatalities or injury to the fans from the two opposing teams.”

Police have historically been quick to deploy the agent to disperse crowds.

The ZRP did express its displeasure with some political figures who used the incident as tool.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is disturbed by some politicians who tried to take advantage of the high profile soccer match to incite violence before, during and after the soccer match,” the statement added. “Some of the political undertones have been clearly seen on social media platforms.”

Some linked it to the recent elections, which saw the governing party retain the executive and a parliamentary majority. Bulawayo voters were heavily in favour of the opposition CCC party’s candidates.

Activists were all over social media agitating for the same action as the hooligans to push for protests.

There was no indication whether any action would be taken against this.
