Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is making the headlines again for things he says away from home that he won’t say back home.
This time he has spoken out in favour of gay rights in Zimbabwe. Many will know that this is the complete opposite of what he said about a year ago.
In doing this Tsvangirai has simply opened himself up to attack from the conservative Zimbabweans, who constitute the majority. And of course there is the small factor of President Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF.
He will win the gay vote with these pronouncements but a huge chunk from the conservative will walk away, if not to Mugabe’s side then to no-man’s land.
It just gets me a bit worried because I think my Prime Minister makes utterances based on the occasion. He gets caught up, overwhelmed by the situations he finds himself in and says things that are a departure from what he has said before. Sometimes it makes you wonder where he actually stands on issues.
I would hate to be his PR guy.
