Zimbabwe’s government has said it will start its Covid-19 vaccination drive as soon as next week when it receives the first order of 200,000 from China.
The news came via a press statement from Health and Child Care Minister, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
He said the Sinopharm doses from China have an efficacy of between 76 and and 86%.
The first 200,000 have been donated by China with another 600,000 purchased with delivery set be taken in the first week of March.
The first phase will have two stages and will target frontline workers and these are:
- Health Workers
- Port of Entry Personnel
- Zimra
- Immigration
- Customs
- Security personnel
- Village Health Workers
- Funeral Parlour
The second stage will target those with chronic illness, elderly of 60 and above, inmates, prison population and others in confined settlements.
The second phase will target lecturers, all school staff population, and other staff with medium risk depending on the epidemiological nature of the disease.
The third will cover everyone else.
Zimbabwe is also negotiating for more doses from Russia for the Sputnik V virus. It will also take advantage of the Global and continental facilities. It has since signed up for the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) facility.
The country is targeting vaccination of 10 million. That constitutes two-thirds of its population and according to experts should be enough to create herd immunity.
