So you could have been thinking that e-cigarettes were the safer option, right?
Well a new study shows that you could be inhaling dangerous toxins and carcinogens, like lead, chromium, and even arsenic.
The study took into consideration a sample where people bought actual vapes and not just new ones as previous studies had done. A total of 56 vape devices were considered.
Three elements were tested: the liquid itself, the liquid inside of the vape pen’s chamber, and the aerosol (or vapor).
While toxic metals were not significant in the e-cigarette itself the liquid inside the dispenser and the aerosol contained significant levels of chromium, nickel, and lead.
According to the study’s authors, chromium and nickel have been linked to respiratory disease and lung cancer. And lead can cause neurotoxicity and cardiovascular disease — there is also no safe amount of lead exposure.
It gets crazier.Arsenic was found in 10% of the sampled e-cigarettes. Also it was not clear how the arsenic came about
The study was published on Wednesday in the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives by researchers from Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health. You can read it here
More studies are planned by the team.
