Psychologists have gone some way to explain why you get bit angry when you are hungry, commonly known in colloquial circles as hangry.
It is based on the affect-as-information theory. Essentially, it says how you feel determines how you perceive the world and might make you more irritable than usual. So when you are hungry you might view the whole world in a negative light. In essence people tend to use their feelings as information.
But it gets deeper. The effect is even more when you are not focused on your internal feelings. That means you will get a bit irritable with others and not necessarily link it to your hunger. So therefore you are hangry, but you think the world is just full of a dog’s bollocks.
The study used negative and positive stimulants. So what happened is that non-hangry people were able to confront negative situations better than the hangry ones. But when either said were presented positive stimuli, the tended to react pretty much the same.
The three tips for dealing with it according to hanger?
- Pay attention to your hunger: So eat as soon as possible
- Improve your environment: If you can’t soon, then make sure you create a pleasant environment.
- Step away from volatile situations: Notice it is the stomach at work
