New highly transmissible HIV super-strain found in Netherlands

A new highly transmissible strain of HIV has been discovered in the Netherlands.

It infects individuals in double the time current versions can.

Called VB, strain damages the immune system and weakens a person’s ability to fight everyday infections and disease faster than previous versions of the virus. In short, if you get this strain you will develop AIDS more quickly.

The viral load for VB is said to between 3.5 and 5.5 times higher than current strains.

Some good news

After starting treatment, people infected with the new strain have a similar immune system recovery and survival rate as those infected with other HIBB strains.

What then is critical is getting early detection and treatment.

According to 2022 date, approximately 1.23 million adults in Zimbabwe living with HIV.
