Moderna has announced that it will start running trials for an HIV vaccine.
The vaccine will the messenger RNA (mRNA), the same technology that is used for its Covid-19 vaccine.
The clinical trials will start on August 19 and will conclude in early 2023.
The trial will involve 56 HIV negative people between the ages of 18 and 56. They will get one or two forms of mRNA.

The virus is known to mutate with many variants, so this has been seen as a game changer. So using an inactive form of the HIV does not work.
This creates the possibility of a universal vaccine that will recognise most strains and be able to block them.
HIV/AIDS has been responsible for 35 million deaths worldwide since its discovery in the 1980s. While deaths have slowed down thanks to management and treatment systems, 1.7 million were infected worldwide in 2019.
For many, the cost of Anti-retrovirals is too high, so a vaccine, stopping infections in the first place is the way to go.
