Kenya’s Elgeyo Marakwet will launch a WhatsApp group that will see residents of the county contribute money to enable alcohol brewers go for rehabilitation.
The announcement was made by governor Alex Tolgos at the graduation of 70 women brewers at Ukweli Training Centre.
Rehabilitation of alcoholics is a community effort said the governor and targeted illegal brewers.
It is felt arresting them would not deal with the issue as many engaged in illicit brewing to raise money.
As in Kenya brewing is limited to very few concerns protected by pre-independence acts. This has resulted in the illegal brewing of the 7 Days or Kachasu brew in many rural areas, sold at rockbottom prices with a potent amount of alcohol. Of course the effect of that is abuse of the liquid and dependence on it.
The use of WhatsApp groups to engage in rehabilitation initiatives is an important drive as it allows an outlet for alcoholics to express themselves in the most immediate moments of their weakness.
It will all come down to administration.
