Emirates, Qatar Airways announce bans on flights from Zimbabwe, SA

Emirates Airlines and Qatar Airways have announced restrictions on flights from Zimbabwe and South Africa after the World Health Organisation classified the latest variant of Covid-19, Omicron, one of concern.

Emirates has issued a travel ban on passengers from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini which will take effect beginning Monday.

Qatar Airways says it will not longer accept passengers from South Africa and Zimbabwe onto its fights with immediate effect. Passengers travelling to South Africa and Zimbabwe will continue to be accepted on Qatar Airways flights in line with current restrictions.

Zimbabwe says it has not detected cases of the new strain yet, and has put in measures to mitigate against it.

The South African Medical Association has said that while it does appear highly transmissible, cases are extremely mild, although that could change.
