Africa has made progress in Covid-19 fight – WHO

Africa has made pleasing progress in its fight against Covid-19, the 70th Session of the World Health Organisation Regional Committee for Africa has heard.

Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom has said.

In speaking of the positive steps, Dr Tedros said:

Since the earliest days of the pandemic, WHO has been working round the clock at all three levels to support you, our African Member States.
All countries in Africa now have a preparedness and response plan in place.
All countries on the continent now have lab testing capacity for COVID-19, compared with just 2 at the beginning of the pandemic.
Over the past few months, WHO has shipped millions of test kits and tons of protective equipment to many countries in Africa.

Africa has 1.2 million confirmed cases and while this has been an increase by 100% from six weeks ago, there has been a lot of slowing down.

This has resulted Kenya and Rwanda opening to international flights while Nigeria will follow suit this week. Also added to that is the gradual removal of certain lockdown restrictions.
