Will Traditional Sports Be Popular In Future

When my teenage nephew wants to play sport,he does not go outside to play but he does it from the comfort of his mother’s living room on his PlayStation game console.

My Nephew is not the only one who does not really care for running in the sun, there are thousands of kids from his generation who seem to have less love for the field sports than past generations did. Now I am not suggesting that everyone will take off their sports shoes for video games but it made me wonder if the current sports being played will continue to be relevant in the future.

When you really think of it, sports are just a reflection of a society’s cultural expression. Although it is hard to imagine that at some point a game like soccer never existed. The fact is that someone had to create it and define its rules.

Although sports like soccer still enjoy a huge following, some sports that used to be equally popular seem to have lost their lustre. For instance boxing has been loosing its fan base for some time now. People are weary of the current crop of boxers who now seem to want to spend as little time in the ring as possible

In the USA fight fans have been forced to look for alternatives and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is now attracting a large fan base of former avid boxing fans, who are now opting to follow the hardcore mixed martial arts championship.

Hybrid sports which combine two or more sports in order to create a new sport are also gaining more prominence. A good example of a hybrid sport is chess-boxing. As weird as it may sound there are people out there who actually take chess-boxing seriously.

Other people are inventing totally new sports.A good example is Quidditch which is a based on a fictional sport played in the Harry Potter movies. As strange as this may sound the 2011 Quidditch World Cup had over 100 teams that participated.

Its possible that years from now people will look back at the games and sports we play and say what the heck were those people doing…. just like we do to our ancestors.
