It is something that was last seen in the public in the sixties but a relationship which sees three people in it, knowing each other and all is a thing.
No it is not polygamy.
Journalist and sex educator Alix Fox is quoted in the Huffington Post as saying:
A throuple is an intimate, loving, equal relationship between a trio of people. It’s a play on the word ‘couple’, and indicates a close romantic bond shared by three human beings, rather than the more traditional two. Throuples may consist of three men, three women, or a mixture of genders.
The thing is that the three people have individual relationships with each other. And they feel deeply for each other collectively as well. They may very well have sex with all three of them but there is a deep emotive feeling that is individual as a connection, accepted by the different people in the relationship.
It was treated in season 7 of the Showtime drama series where Kevin (Steve Howey), Veronica (Shanola Hampton) and Svetlana (Isidora Goreshter) evolved their “thrupple” from a string of threesomes and a green-card marriage into one big happy family that includes working and raising kids together as the John Wells-produced series explores polyamory.
In the context down these ends the focus has always been on the man having two wives. In this instance, the wife gets in too. The small house joins the relationship.
BBC Radio 5 spoke to husband and wife Thomas and Cathy Keen, and their partner Nicole Everett who spoke openly about their relationship.
The third person is the mediator. So they can see it from an outside perspective of whatever that situation.
It is all a bit different but it could be the future according to some people.
