No. Drinking beer does not make you see people as more attractive – Study

We have always talked about ‘beer goggles’ as a thing.

For the unimitated, it is the long-held belief of a phenomenon where one finds people they would never ask out more attractive after getting more than a fair share of alcohol down their throats.

Researches say no. It just gives you more courage to approach someone you already fancied.

The study, directed by Molly Bowdring of Stanford University’s Prevention Research Centre (associated with the University of Pittsburgh at the time of this study) and her dissertation adviser, Michael Sayette, involved 18 pairs of male friends in their twenties.

They were shown photos and videos in which they rated the attractiveness of the subjects. They were then told of a possible future interaction with these individuals for an experiment.

They were called back in pairs where they drank alcohol to the legal limit and on other sessions where they had non-alcoholic beverages.

When they were drinking, they were 1.71 times more likely than when they were sober to choose one of their top-four attractive individuals to potentially meet in a future study.

So, in essence, alcohol just gives the men liquid courage to go and approach the person they are into.

Yep, that girl was always your type.

The findings are published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
