FIVE reasons Zimbabwe is awesome no matter who wins

Zimbabwe goes to elections on Monday to choose a president, members of parliament and councillors.

All attention is on who will occupy state house with the two front-runners being the incumbent, Zanu PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa and the youthful MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa.

If you follow social media you will be made to believe by followers of either that their candidate will win the election and grim pictures being painted of what would happen if their choice did not prevail.

But in all of this, we have to remember what makes Zimbabwe awesome and we have chosen five reasons to highlight.

  1. The people – Our people are awesome. They are on the whole still kind and polite even to a fault. We are pretty welcoming as well.
  2. Despite differences we have generally avoided war  – We have come to points in our history when it seemed like a war would be inevitable. Perhaps inevitable is a big ask but there are many countries who would shoot each other for less. So kudos to you, Zimbabwean
  3. Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Alick Macheso Chiwoniso, Lovermore Majaivana, Ilanga, Mokoomba, Bhundu Boys, Jah Prayzah, Ammara Brown – We have produced some amazing talent in this country, many of whom have gone on to grace some of the biggest. The Bhundu Boys shared the stage with Madonna at her peak. Tuku has just come from a major festival in Portugal. Mokoomba will share the stage with The Weeknd at the Lollapalooza Festival.
  4. ZimDancehall – We are the country of Soul Jah Love, Winky D and more in a genre that has defined our country’s musical landscape. The urban sound has become a staple at parties, across political, racial and other divides.
  5. Gango

Have a good one and remember to love each other.
