Running a one-person business can be incredibly rewarding, but given you do not have a boss to answer to and a team to share the load, it can be tough to be accountable to yourself and others.

In Zimbabwe, where entrepreneurship is often driven by necessity and innovation, staying accountable can be the difference between thriving, merely surviving or going under.

It could be anything from running a backyard garden project, a consultancy-based solopreneur or a middle-man doing logistics. It all requires levels of accountability to find success.

So, we share five ways to build accountability when you are a one-person business.

1

Set Clear, Achievable Goals and Write Them Down

It’s easy to lose focus when wearing all the hats in your small business.

That is why setting clear goals helps you stay on track. Whatever the goal is, be it increasing sales, improving your product, or expanding your market reach, writing down your goals gives you a sense of direction. Use to-do lists like Microsoft, planners, or digital apps (notes on your phone, reminders or even WhatsApp-to-self pinned to the top) to map out your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.

2

Create a Routine and Stick to It

Establishing a daily routine helps you dutifully maintain consistency.

Identify the time of day when you’re most productive and schedule your most important tasks for that period.

Whether it is responding to emails first thing in the morning or dedicating afternoons to client meetings, having a structured day keeps you disciplined.

In those periods, eliminate distractions such as social media or the urge to watch MaiTT skits during your work time.

Factor in things such as power cuts and other interruptions to create flexibility and backup plans for your productivity.

3

Track Your Progress and Reflect Regularly

A lot of solopreneurs suffer from not knowing where they stand. Tracking your progress is essential for staying accountable.

At the end of each week or month, take some time to reflect on what you’ve achieved, what fell short, and why.

Did you meet your sales targets? Did you manage your time well? Honest self-reflection helps you identify areas for improvement and keeps you focused on your goals.

You can use simple methods like keeping a journal or using apps like Trello or Google Sheets to monitor your tasks.

4

Set Personal Deadlines and Hold Yourself to Them

Procrastination is the biggest drawback for solopreneurs. Without a team or boss to set deadlines, it’s easy to procrastinate.

Setting personal deadlines creates a sense of urgency and keeps you moving forward. Treat your deadlines as non-negotiable. If you promise something ensure it’s done, no excuses.

If your business is online-based, like selling crafts on social media, create a content schedule and stick to it. Schedule posts to free up time to do more urgent things.

And for things you might not quite qualified for, such as your taxes, outsource so that you can hit the deadlines that make you money.

5

Celebrate Your Wins and Learn from Your Losses

Accountability isn’t just about correcting mistakes; it’s also about celebrating your successes, no matter how small.

Give yourself a high-five. Whether you’ve completed a big project, hit a sales milestone, or simply stuck to your schedule, take a moment to acknowledge your hard work. It boosts morale and motivates you to keep going.

At the same time, view setbacks as learning opportunities. If a marketing campaign didn’t bring in the expected results, analyse what went wrong and adjust your approach.

Stay accountable. That is how your business will grow.
