Areas suitable for growing the coffee bean will be halved by 2050 if climate change goes at the same rate.

Wild coffee will disappear entirely by 2080.

It is not just deforestation affecting the coffee business. Climate change will also see an increase in fungi that destroy the plant. In Colombia this fungus is already being reported in the mountains, previously thought to be too cold for it to survive. On Mount Kilimanjaro the beetle is now found 300m higher than in the last century.

The Climate Institute has said that in the next few decades there will be a dramatic impact on the aroma and taste of coffee. That will also see the price go up. Even instant coffee is not immune.

Even instant coffee is likely to be hit hard in a world of 3°C or more.

At current population levels, the impact will see 120 million livelihoods at risk mostly in poorer countries.
