As with every year, the embassies of Belgium, Canada, France, Switzerland and Alliance Française (Bulawayo, Harare and Victoria Falls) and the French School of Harare have come together to organise this year’s Francophonie Cultural Festival to celebrate the cultural diversity which spans the French-speaking countries present in Zimbabwe.
At the opening of the Francophonie Week on March 18, the award winning French film Qu’ est-ce qu’on a fait au bon dieu (Serial Bad Weddings) will be screened at the Alliance Française’s in Harare and Bulawayo. Victoria Falls will open with the musical concert by RETRO on Wednesday 20 March.
Three other award winning films from Switzerland (The Chorus), Canada (Gabrielle) and Belgium (Don’t Tell Her) will be screened concurrently until 22 March at Alliance Française’s Old Mutual Theater in Harare and Bulawayo. All films will be in French with English subtitles. Screening starts at 7pm.
Other activities lined up include the French dictation competition which will be hosted by the French School in Harare on Tuesday 19 March and will be open to both adults and children with knowledge of the French language and the Educational Fair that will held at the Alliance Française on Monday 18 March at 2pm.
On Friday evening a live musical concert and karaoke from Gasy M’Vazo, Retro and Erica Ravaivosoa will kick start the weekend with the legendary Congolese Rhumba group, Diamond Musica closing off the festival on Saturday 23 March from 7pm. The films and the musical concerts are all FREE.
The Francophonie Week is a festival commemorated in mid-March the world over to celebrate the French language and culture. The 2019 programme shows the linguistic and cultural diversity of the French-speaking countries present in Zimbabwe.
