Why the #Njema album launch was important for Winky D

Winky D has just dropped his highly-anticipated album, Njema, and had a concert for it in Harare.

By the time it was out, the album had been bootlegged, probably from how it started becoming available online in different parts of the world where 2020 arrive earlier than most.

The album itself is something we will review later but can we just give a shout out for that Area 51 song for us geeks? Parfait fam. Parfait.

Now back to why this launch concert was important.

Other than when he released Gombwe, Winky D-controlled shows are hen’s teeth here in Zimbabwe. And by hen’s teeth we mean, well, he features as one of the performers when there are international shows, or when he is hired to headline a public corporate-sponsored event.

The launch of Njema was a Vigilance Music event. It is when Winky D curated the show for himself. He headlined the event and chose who would perform with him. He and his manager Jonathan Banda as well as the rest of the Vigilance crew took ownership of what Winky D would give to the world.

Yes, Econet Zimbabwe came in with through some of its assets but this was Winky D as he wanted the world to see.

For him, this defined a moment when his galaxy, where his extra-terrestrial beings come from, said, “See our world, experience it”.

This is who he wanted to be, the hustler, the owner of his art, identity and now his space.

And this is the Winky D the world needs.
