South African comedian Trevor Noah’s debut on The Daily Show has come and gone.
The 31 year-old took over from the iconic Jon Stewart who over 16 years made it the voice that speaks in the face of bulls**t.
We watched the debut and while it had soft ratings it was a good launch for the comedian from the dusty streets of Johannesburg.
Noah started off creating context not only about where he came from but also touching on things such as the immigrant issues and questions over his getting the show. A few other big hitters some of them women had turned down the show and an ‘immigrant is now doing a show Americans rejected’.
While you could see that there were a few nerves in some of the delivery, sitting at home or the front row or somewhere, Stewart would have said, this boy is going to be alright. Especially with better writing that will bring his personality out more.
The interview with Kevin Hart had some funny points but there were times when Hart wanted to dominate the interview and be on his own tangents. Noah will get it right very quickly make no bones about it.
He is made for TV.
The big story for us, is, it is happening. It is inspirational. It is a dream that every African can look at think of so many possibilities that the world has to offer. Not only has he gone there, he has brought in Ugandan-born South African comedian David Kibuuka and the Ugandan comedian Joseph Opio as writers. Noah has also increased the number of women working on the show.
We will of course be watching it and dreaming, that one day… just one day…
