VIEW FROM THE VERANDAH: Poems, breathing, four-letter-words and old school

Shanee R Banda comes with another trio of poems from her Summer of Love collection

A breath of fresh air

When you’re used to toxic
It becomes almost normal
You know it’s not
But it’s all you know

They minimize your concerns
Tell you you’re overthinking
Make you doubt what you’re certain of
You develop traits you don’t like at all

You know you deserve better
But you reach a point
Where you start to think
Maybe you’re asking for too much

And then, when you least expect it
You meet someone
Who embraces your peculiarities
And takes it upon himself
To acquaint himself
with what makes you you
So he can better relate to you

He loves to listen
He wants to hear
all about what you have to say
You don’t have to force your side of the story

You were so used to feeling unheard
It’s a horrible way to live
You think you love this person
But really, it’s a non-existent idea of them
That you’re obsessing over

And then from no where
You’re introduced to genuine affection
Real friendship
Authentic intimacy
Untainted love

That four letter word

The chemical reactions
That build of their on accord
Unsanctioned by reason
Do not happen overnight

They are the result
Of days, weeks, and months
Perhaps even years
Of growing affection

It is true what we say in Shona
“Moyo muti”, the heart, well,
It grows where it wills
Like a tree

It’s near impossible then
For those emotions
To be erased just like that
Can the coin be so easily flipped

When the letters remain only so
Parts of the alphabet, unconstructed
Floating in the heart
As molecules in the air

It is unbearable
For they are as volatile gases
Demanding release
And threatening to escape

Will you say it
Can you say it
Will you dare

Old School

Today it’s like looking for unicorns
Or wishing for utopia
Pie in the sky
Deluded dreams of a dreamer

An interest
That would have you
Stirring boiling water
While looking into the distance
Totally absent

Yearning for that moment
When you would lay your eyes
On just him in a room full
And forgetting to breathe
When you’d catch his

Graduating from infatuation
To obsessed friendship
Absolutely nothing and nobody
Coming in between

Hearts in sync
Beating to the same rhythm
Even when miles apart
Still catching the tune

So comfortable and at ease
Kicking the shoes off
And chasing each other
Like carefree toddlers

Listening to a song
And instantly
Hearing her
In those lyrics

Buying a record
Because you know
She’ll have it on repeat
Just because
It’s from you

And dancing in the rain
Because
why not
