#ThursPoetry: Homonculus – Unanswered Questions

#ThursPoetry is back this week, in partnership with our friends at Gourd of Consciousness, for brand new Zimbabwean original poems.

The Homunculus is a poet and visual artist from Zaka, Masvingo. Having both parents as teachers, he was introduced to the world of literature and arts from an early age. He would write poetry and short stories as soon as he could read and write. Pairing poetry with visual arts is a passion he continues to explore in a bid to make poetry more mainstream. Moreover, he enjoys music and plays both marimba and nyunga-nyunga mbira. The Homunculus strongly believes that through poetry, one experiences self-discovery and emotional actualization. Currently he is a member of Gourd of Consciousness Poetry platform through which some of his works have been published.

Why
Are your ears blind to the dim lights?
Why
Are your lips deaf to your heavy heart?
Why
Does your nose not hear the raging flames beyond?
Why
Do you touch burning coals but can’t smell your own essence?

Why
Do you feel pain and still smile?
Why
Does laughing hurt but tears bring bliss?
Why
Do you keep that hurt inside and put love aside?
Why
Oh why do you love hatred more than devious love?

Why
Do harlots smell sweeter than virgins?
Why
Do I cry when I rise from my dreams?
Why
Should I do good when I’m a worm’s’ meal?
Why
Should I feed this prison that delays my end?

…. why?
Oh why am I and why can I not be?
