We are a few days away from the fifth edition of the Zim Hip Hop Awards.
As a genre 2015 has been another tough year although a few flash points especially from the south of Zimbabwe.
Bulawayo rapper Cal_Vin leads the pack with 7(he says 8) nominations and looks a favourite in quite a few of them.

The last few awards have been littered with all sorts of things from fights on stage (remember when Cal_Vin Hakeem rushed the stage and said ‘That’s Bullshit!’ when Peekay won best rapper?) to judges quitting less than 24 hours before the event and other controversial things.
The organisers say they have made every effort to improve. Awards Sean Campbell says this year will see a much better product.
So what are we hoping they will improve?
Entertainment
In previous years the entertainment has been, well, erm, errr… yah. The key things have often been, well too much of it(7 performances is too much), without clarity over how long each is supposed to be. We hope that the rehearsals for the awards have included the organisers making sure they have direct oversight over the intricate details of the entertainment.
Length
The awards go for way too long. By the time the best artist of the year and those other premium awards are given most of the crowd will have left. This has happened all too often. Start at 7 and be done by 9.30 and then party. It is a simple thing to do. Two things other than the random-looking entertainment that contribute to this are the speeches and the fact that MCs often seem to be winging it, as opposed to having something scripted. Get on stage, make your announcement and leave.
Reward craft
The fall-out after an awards ceremony anywhere is always there. Someone will always be unhappy. This is especially so when the criteria for winning isn’t super clear. When everyone is aware of the terms and conditions there are less grey areas. We are pretty sure that they have improved from earlier years but rewarding craft is often bulletproof.
The hip hop awards are at 1+1 Happy, Longchen Plaza on Thursday 10 December 2015.
