Haywire is a masterclass in physical theatre and expansive acting.

Tafadzwa Bob Mutumbi and Chipo Chikara-Nyoni lead this piece of art, which meanders around mental health struggles, providing an intimate glaze into the destructive nature.

What makes it riveting is the choreography with two performers who trust each other’s steps.

Meandering through different characters, Maurice, Stephen, Tau, parents, bosses, sisters and the like, the two retain our attention.

Chikara-Nyoni’s skill when she goes through three characters in one scene over five minutes is a marvel to watch as she pursues their agency. They have different emotions, and she portrays them with respect.

It is a play you would probably find difficult to see other actors perform because of its insistence.

Perhaps some aspects of it are meta, and there will be nuggets that consume one with internal discourse when exploring their meaning.

The subject matter can get heavy. But if you watch, you will have something to masticate.

Haywire is written by Everson Ndlovu.

Haywire details: 16,17,18,19 October 2024 at 6:30 pm at the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre, 68 Mchlery Ave, Eastlea, Harare. 🎟 $5
