Zimbabwean actress Jesesi Mungoshi has penned a heartfelt message to everyone, reminiscing on her role as the titular character in the iconic 1992 movie Neria.
“Playing the role of Neria was more than just an acting job it was a calling,” Mungoshi wrote.
“It was a chance to give voice to the silent struggles of women, to reflect our culture, our resilience, and our hope as a nation. I never imagined that this story would resonate for generations, nor that you would continue to embrace me with such warmth more than 30 years later.”
Mungoshi plays the part of a widow whose brother-in-law, played by Dominic Kanaventi, takes advantage of her children and belongings.
The movie also reflects the life of the director, Godwin Mawuru. Tsitsi Dangarembga wrote it. The late Oliver Mtukudzi sang the theme song and played the part of Jethro.
Mungoshi says the reaction to this day is ‘deeply humbling’.
“Thank you for seeing me, for remembering Neria, and for walking this journey with me,” she continued. “Your messages, your greetings in the streets, your reflections on the film they mean more to me than I can ever say.”
There is a remake, Neria 2021, but many still speak fondly of the original one.
