The Zimbabwean hip hop landscape is stuck in a loop and looking for a saviour and we’re not sure it is going to come from.
Hatiterere by Marcus Mafia featuring King Active, Kikky Badass and Schingy has some clever rhymes riding on the throes of popular culture that will appeal to the heads but it is very ‘industry’.
The beat gives you very little, bordering precariously on monotony. It survives on the clever rhymes (sadly they aren’t saying anything new really) and that’s it.
Little Brother’s Phonte Tigalo put it succinctly:
I mean dope beats, dope rhymes, this hip-hop ain’t really that hard man.
Get that and you’re good. The King Active, Kikky Badass and Schingy are very talented. This song does not bring out the best in them.
But as the song quite says, they will what they want anyway.
