QUICK SONG REVIEW: Dj Stavo ft Roki – The Journey

A new Steven Sanders aka Dj Stavo release is always going to be a cause for excitement in the house community.

His previous projects came with celebrated vocalists that include Oliver Mtukudzi,Uhuru,Trevor Dongo and Jah Prayzah. Now his first installment of the year features  the most dazzling and versatile artist of our time -Roki.

Having relocated to South Africa, The Journey is a coruscating and  nostalgic essay in the life of the man we know as Rockford Gold Josphat. It presents a precise encapsulation of that deep tech house sound that Stavo does so well: deep, thick, heavy and oozes out your speakers like treacle.

It is  instant and somberly walloping as painted by Roki’s imagery which bear the emotional imprint of years of making acclaimed music but struggling to make a perfect living from it, hence the abrupt moving out.

I didn’t tell nobody where i was going /I have to find myself a brand new home

Word has it that he left hurriedly amid of a much publicized skirmish with his girlfriend. However, some sources say that he took off to further his “eyes-on-hollywood” dream he revealed last year.

So what we have in The Journey is a doggedly mainstream song from an artist who’s sticking to his influences and a DJ who’s widening his sonic palette. It’s rich and a high-quality release, and unlike a lot of dance music,  it has a genuine soul as well as a very prominent and illustrative human face.
