QUICK EP REVIEW: Kevin Munetsi – Mack.a.Roni

Budding RnB singer/songwriter and producer Kevin Munetsi has unveiled his cloying three-track EP Mack.a.Roni. The project pursues urban contemporary RnB sound, tackling the conventional themes of love, romance, lust and desire.

Clocking in at twelve minutes, sixteen seconds, the EP is Kevin’s first full project after a string of the little-known singles (five to be precise). It is a digestible entree demonstrating the singer’s keen emotional intelligence, a willingness to throw his heart on the table and uncanny understanding of the female psyche.

The Marc Blaze produced Flav and EP opener is an amiable heart-on-sleeve ode to the girl he adores. The glamorous song finds Kevin singing poignantly over sweeping synth lines, slinky bass and a soothing keyboard. RockWithU follows in its heels with its brilliantly addictive and singalong chorus. The self-produced record start up is a speedy-jam which eschews high-energy groove in favor of a slow burning one. It also carries blunt literalism and raunchy undertones as the singer squiggly begs,

Just let me know when you’re ready, and Imma rock you up so steady

On Vibe, Kevin presents us with a flirtatious story. Convincing a lady that her man is clueless and inconsiderate of her feelings by making her wait always, the Leave With You singer coos and entreats her to dump her man for him.

Summing up, the Mack.a.Roni EP is densely packed, both sonically and emotionally. It is Kevin doing what he does best: maximalist, multi-layered RnB with an emotional rawness that leaves you feeling like you’ve peered directly into his openly-dissected heart. With this release, he’s crafted high-calibre songs, beautiful enough to indicate to us that 2017 could be the year Kevin rises to stardom. We absolutely love it.
