OUR PERFECT WEDDING ZIM: We hope it gets better after underwhelming premiere

Our Perfect Wedding Zimbabwe finally debuted on Zambezi Magic (DStv channel 162).

To say it was underwhelming probably hits the mark. It was not a disaster but it was not a pleasant watch either.

It felt like the pilot you send before money is thrown at a project to make it work proper.

Here are a few things that we picked:

The sound

This was all over the place. The levels of the voices as well as sound in the background jumped uncomfortably which is always a bad experience for the viewer.

The continuity

While the wedding followed a flow, the way the edits cut away from the existing scenes was abrupt at times. You were left wondering what was happening at times.

The host

Adiona Chidzonga came across as unsure, blending way too much into the rest of the wedding. She lacked energy and did not appear to own the scenes she found herself hosting. She came across as hanging out at the wedding. Not an unmitigated disaster. Could be more to directing than anything as some shots made her peripheral at times even as she spoke.

The wedding

Weddings have all sorts of anxiety around them. This one didn’t. It felt as if some of the things that make for a dramatic wedding were left out. You know, the things that are a cause for familiarity in the wedding. And given this was full of socialites and performers from Zimbabwe (It was gospel singer Tembalami’s wedding) too many people performed for the camera. That kinda cuts the reality out of it.

So yeah, it is a tough start and because it is a franchise kinda setup we will compare it to the Mzansi Magic version.

Hopefully Ngoda Productions will take heed and give us the kind of product that totally feels like the original, coupled with a Zimbabwean flair.

The good news is that it can only improve from here.

Catch the show every Thursday night from 21.30hrs on Zambezi Magic (DStv channel 162).
