OH DEAR: Holy Ten regrets Winky D collaboration, and here is what we think

Holy Ten PIC: Pindula

In a startling development, rapper Holy Ten has said he regrets his collaboration with heavyweight artist Winky D on a song of the latter’s latest album.

In a tweet, he said,”Activists, journalists, lawyers – Split opinions will not do any good for a brand that’s trying to serve & save everyone so help me by not acting like I’ve picked a side. Do not politicize a project that I’ve considered a mere honor to be a part of. I regret it now honestly”

Why, you must be wondering?

Well Holy Ten is on a track called Ibotso off the Eureka Eureka album. In itself the song is about the girl child and how susceptible they are to exploitation by old men with resources.

Fair topic right?

However, in a politically underdeveloped environment and having walked into a major election year, the project has been seen by one side as a manifesto for the other. In short, the album has sections some see as propping up the opposition party talking points. To be fair this is what they always say about a Winky D album really.

Others have made reference to the caustic line on hutus and tutsi’s in the song by Winky D, which provides symbolism to strife in the ghetto. It’s all symbolism but people can be so serious these days.

Our verdict

It is unfortunate that a young man who has just probably snagged a dream collaboration has been forced into this. We find it difficult to criticise free expression, and we only comment on productions in their context. But as we mentioned, in a politically immature environment, with its binary thinking, nuance doesn’t exist.

They even say being a neutral means you have chosen a side, which is really weird.
