What kind of legacy our leaving for the future generation?
A powerful and politically charged song from Winky D and Shingai is Dzimba Dzemabwe. Political not in the context of party stuff but the struggles of the country.
On the song, Winky D sings in English and his only ChiShona words are in the chorus.
The unfortunate line in there is one which refers to Zimbabwe as a breadbasket, which has been oft-used by the Western world to criticise the land reform exercise.
The video has a lot going. There is the Mbuya Nehanda and Sekuru Kaguvi image at the beginning, which is then transposed by Shingai and Winky D respectively. Not sure about the Kaguvi reference given how he ended, but OK.
Then there is hustle, conflict, happiness and sadness all in the same video. So you don’t know whether you should be happy or sad. Maybe that is the story of Zimbabwe, where there are odd bits and goodlies as well.
The song is off Winky D’s new album Eureka Eureka.
