“Maybe if you were Shona, Maybe you would be further ahead,” Deevox sings hauntingly in Cal Vin’s new track Maybe If I Was A…

His song speaks of the struggle of an artist from Southern Zimbabwe and says sometimes he feels if he was from a different tribe, from the north of the country.

It is an uncomfortable conversation, which he makes the reference to clout (music for likes and retweets), where bragging about the number one position doesn’t bring the bag home for the family.

Cal Vin has been talking about these issues a lot but this is the first time he has been this direct in wax.

Sadly it is a struggle that goes back two decades and the song draws excerpt from Lovemore Majaivana explaining why he quit music.
