Mojak Lehoko tells us why he thinks Batman would be an awkward date and invents a new music genre

Comedian Mojak Lehoko, famous for being a champion of Comedy Central Roast Battle is the face of Cartoon Network’s SuperheroHQ pop-up channel currently on DStv channel 300.

Mojak Lehoko

He has brought some African flavour and lots of laughter to the channel. In-between the mainstream programming, he has presented stand-up comedy videos in which he identifies with the humour found in the superheroes of the channel.

And so we had a chance to ask him a few questions:

3-mob.com: You won comedy central roast battle. That is a scary cauldron. Where do you test your material?
Mojak: I test my material in front of a mirror or backstage. Hopefully the comedians laugh! But the true test is on the stage. Sometimes the material works, and it’s great, but sometimes it’s a little bit tricky and it has to be edited out of the show.

3-mob.com: How do you write for your podcast?
Mojak: The podcast is very much on the fly. It’s basically South African artists whom I really appreciate such as comedians like Loyiso Gola. And I’ve got a few interesting people coming up so it’s all kind of improvised and we just figure out what we talk about as we go.

3-mob.com: Who was your favourite guest? (Don’t worry, we will snitch)
Mojak:My favourite guest on the podcast … wow there’s so many. Lady Skollie, I’m a big fan of her artwork she’s exhibited all over the world. Loyiso Gola is a world-class comedian, also my favourite. I also enjoyed talking to Glen Biderman-Pam who is a comedian and a director. There are a few more I’d love to tell you about but they’re not out yet…

3-mob.com: Supposing you could be a super-hero to fix ONE single problem in the world and you had to do it mute, what would it be? (You can’t get your voice back)
Mojak: Wow – looking at all the superheroes on the new Pop-Up channel, SuperheroHQ, super-powered by Cartoon Network on DStv channel 300, I would have to say The Flash just so we could bring back electricity! We’ve been having a very tough time recently with all the power cuts we’ve been experiencing. I would like to eradicate load shedding- that would be my one task as the flash.

3-mob.com: Which superhero would make the most awkward date?
Mojak: Funny that you ask – I have had a few dates lately with the superheroes from Cartoon Network’s SuperheroHQ Pop-Up channel on DStv 300. So after working with them, it would probably be Batman. Just because he’s got so much, what do you buy someone who has so much as a gift? I think it would be very awkward. It would be very awkward even for anniversaries and birthdays. Superman would also be awkward because he can see through walls – just imagine!

3-mob.com: Finally, the big one! Gqom or Opera?
Mojak: Yoh! How about we put them both together and we do Qqompera and create a new genre. We’ll start in Durban with an orchestra, I can’t wait to hear that one. I want to be the first to hear that one!

The SuperHeroHQ Pop-Up channel runs until 31 March 2019.
