Let’s Talk About Reason And That ‘Reazus Christ’ Cover

South African rapper Reason has had people catching feelings about the cover to his new track coming up.

Looking at what you see above you will understand why.

A lot of people on the continent defend the culture that is Christianity as if they were the ones who came up with it. But we are not talking about religion here because we know how that will result in all manner of rants coming up and calls from people who are serious about these things.

Anyway to be honest Reason has exercised his right to creativity. He took an art form that was popular in the dark ages (the image of a white Jesus) and then adapted to the life we live now. He has an unequivocal right to artistic appreciation. After all, at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) a pray was staged that happily mad fun of local culture and arts. It is art at the end of the day and is an individual expression of the person expressing it.

Now. We are not saying people should not be offended. Throw tantrums of you want and if it makes you happy go and pray for him. It is exactly about that. Making you feel better about you.

But remember you are mad at him for his unshackling himself from important culture, one of the principle instruments of colonisation.

Mind you the cover also speaks to issues such as the commodification of religion and how it is being used again to exploit the weak.

Did we just make you uncomfortable?

On his Instagram Reason writes:

At 1pm on Friday the 24th of July, I will present to you a few new truths.

Not YOUR truth. Not THE truth. But A truth.

MY truth.

Spread the word.

And this image of my truth.

#ReazusChristIsCummin

His truth. An image of how he sees the world.

At the end of the day art does provoke. It is not sacred. If anything it challenges totem poles. Look, reason doesn’t need us protect him. He is a grown man.

At the same time, his right to freedom of expression is sacred. And it is that right we will always fight for.
