The promo reads:

Inspired by [the sharp-witted satirical views of society and humanity as well as the vitality of characters] and Dickens’ own practice of telling his stories aloud, Kevin Hanssen comes to the Rosebank Theatre to present a show that transforms Dickens’ writing into a theatrical delight. Three vivid stories transport us from the whimsy of the French aristocracy, to a ghostly train tunnel, to the mad, crazy lovableness of a miser who found his soul.

Dickens – The Master Storyteller received regular standing ovations during its run at HIFA (the Harare International Festival of the Arts) and is not to be missed!

We spoke to Hanssen who is currently in South Africa.

3mob.com:How did you land the gig?
KH: The performances came out of discussions with Nicholas Ellenbogen who runs Rosebank Theatre with his family.

3-mob.comWhat can the audience can expect?
KH: I hope the show will match its former HIFA glory! Actually it’s coming on the heels of a show called Bulawayo Boogie, directed by Debi Hawkins  (Zim Actress who did Mpinga Mornings at HIFA last year). Nicholas Ellenbogen grew up in Zim and the guy who’s going to be doing my tech is a up-and-coming guy called Tafara who is also from Zim, so a bit of a Zim bunch all round!

The Rosebank theatre is owned by internationally acclaimed Alexander McCall Smith who was born and also grew up in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo to be specific.

Hanssen recently won best actor at REPS AFDIS Awards. On top of that he is the founder of Zimbabwe’s only regular improv act The Impro Show. His book Jump Theatre – How to make a play, is an absolute must-read.

Dickens – The Master Storyteller runs 5th – 9th April at 20:00 with a matinee at 15:00 on Saturday 9th.
