Gareth Cliff taken off Idols judging panel over tweet

M-Net has announced the removal of the popular Gareth Cliff as a member of the Idols judges panel for the coming season over a tweet about the Penny Sparrow issue.

Gareth Cliff: Africa\'s New Voice

Responding to a tweet which asked if racist comments on social media should be criminalised, he said:

People do not understand free speech at all.

Not his proudest moment given Sparrow called black people monkeys. He has since apologised for his comments.

Although no mention was made about the comments on social media by the company when the announcement was made on Friday,  given the Twitter outrage calling for a boycott of Idols, its hand was forced.

In a statement later, it said that he has a zero-tolerance approach to social media mishaps. Presenters have been made aware of this.

More and more often we now see the effects of social media on real life. Whereas before people could say things online and not expect it to have any bearing on life offline social media indiscretions now have consequences.
