Danai Gurira’s new play, ‘Familiar’ set to debut in New Orleans this month

Danai Gurira is riding the wave of her potrayal of the warrior Okoye in The Black Panther and will reprise that role in the latest Avengers movie. In amongst all this, her new play Familiar is set to be performed at the Seatttle Rep’s Bagley Wright Theatre in New Orleans from the 27th of April to 27th of May 2018.

Danai Gurira

Having already made history with Eclipsed, the first Broadway play to be written by, directed by and entirely cast with black women, Familiar, will see Gurira’s exploits directed by Taibi Magar and produced in partnership with The Guthrie Theatre.

The Synopsis reads:

In wintry Minnesota, the Chinyaramwira family is getting ready for the marriage of their eldest daughter, but when the bride and groom want to observe a TRADITIONAL ZIMBABWEAN CUSTOM for their wedding, deep-seated tensions arise. Adding fuel to the flames, unexpected family guests turn up revealing UNINVITED SECRETS. Written by Tony™-nominated Danai Gurira, Familiar focuses a lens on the MESSY, HILARIOUS, SPIRITED dynamic of a modern first-generation Zimbabwean American family, revealing the layers of complexities rooted in the search for A SENSE OF BELONGING.

Gurira was quoted in The Seattle Times on the autobiographical nature of the play:

Sure Sure.  But largely the journey of “Familiar” was a very specific one, because it really became its own being. At first it was born of an impetus around being around members of my family at a wedding and just being around very interesting characters and culture clashes. But it was never directly based on people; it was kind of inspired by people. I had tons of material, not just for my own family, but from so many other immigrant families that I know and immigrant experiences that I know of across the United States. I always think a play tells you what it is and it’s your job to become an open and present enough vessel to hear it and obey it and submit to what it is.

Hope we get to see Familiar at some point in Zimbabwe.
