August Strindberg’s ‘Comrades’ Debuts At Reps Today

A Zimbabwean translation of Swedish playwright August Strindberg comedy Comrades debuts at Reps tonight.

The play is the first production from the newly-formed Arts Investment Trust, a trust brought to life by Tawanda Mutero Kanengoni, Patience Gamu Tawengwa and Kudzai Chimbaira.

The play features Rutendo Tapiwa Chigudu, Privillage Mutendera, Kevin Hanssen and Leeroy Gono. It is directed by Tawengwa.

According to the press release:

The play highlights the issues of marriage – the responsibilities of each of the parties, the proper relationship between them, the respective rights, duties and privileges of each.

The production is part of Strindberg Year and the play is set to tour Sweden this October where it is also expected to be part of the closing celebrations.

Sweden-based Chimbaira had this to say about the production

I am humbled by the joint efforts put together by the three of us who started Arts Investment Trust. Amazing to work with Patience Tawengwa and Tawanda Kanengoni, I admire thier hard work for the betterment of our arts industry and above all for their fearlessness to tell the truth -(which is very vital for any serious artist). What I find exciting about the production are actors that we have cast in the play. Kevin Hanssen has vast experience as an actor and director (I had the honour to work with him during my training at Theory X). To fuse Kevin´s experience with creative and passionate performers like Rutendo Tapiwa Chigudu, Leeroy Gono and Privillage Mutendera -what more can a producer ask for! Its exciting to have the opportunity to have in our production, actors from diverse cultural and acting backgrounds, who are keen to inspire and learn from each other.

Comrades will be staged at the Reps Theatre Upstairs from the 10th to the 21st of July 2012 at 19:00hrs everyday except on Sundays and Mondays. There also will be a matinee show on the 14th of July 2012 at 14:30hrs.
