Zimbabwe just held the interviews for the inaugural Multichoice Talent Factory set for later this year and we had an exclusive chat with Southern Africa’s director for the hub.
On the experience of the interviews across Southern Africa:
Across Southern Africa they have been interesting but to your credit Zimbabwe let me say, the most challenging candidates were from Zimbabwe. That is where we got the very best, top candidates. That was just interesting in that particular aspect. So in coming up with the two that we are going to recruit for the Multichoice Talent Factory, it is going to be very challenging… The girls were top. The guys came with their ‘A’ plan and the interviews were just great. You see these youths and you see the future of film in Zimbabwe. I’m excited.
On why the academy is important
What we just finished interviewing for is for the academy. In Southern Africa we are going to get 20 people from across seven countries. They are coming to Zambia, where the hub is going to be and they are going to be there for a year. We are going to train them theory, practical, internship and they are going to do a long feature or a series which will run on one of our platforms. We will have brought them full circle in a programme that is fully funded. They don’t have to pay for anything and we will even give them a stipend but when they come back they will become our commandos, the ones who are fully trained and have product that is already seen.
And there is more…
The second part is Masterclasses. We will be back in Zimbabwe and right now we are talking to the industry experts who are going to tell us where the gaps are and we wull find how best to get masters who can come and train.
Lwando also adds that all students at the MTF will be taught everything from writing, camerawork and the works. They will also go and intern in places where they will make us of these skills.
