ALBUM REVIEW: Cynthia Mare – Shinga

This is a much better produced album than her debut offering Songs My Mother Loved.

Cynthia Mare

Shinga  is an album she made without the shackles of expected emotion but catering for a market that is oft-ignored, the motherly women without the need to be preached to.

Her first word, from the title song:

Usacheme

Speak to the different struggles that have brought her life this far.

It is has strong presence of the Oliver Mtukudzi-mentored Donald Kanyuchi.

This an album we would drive late at night to, getting you deeply pensive. It’s filled with strong culturally inborn and incred spiritual themes. It’s not about faith but willpower. Even when she sings about love as in Mudiwa Wangu it is in these terms. Largely a bit folksy without being other-worldly.

She said this was her favourite album. We love the storyline behind her first one but on this we are sold on the deliberate music.

The drawback… Well the inclusion of Dai Zvaibvira and english versions of some songs and redoing of others made the album feel a bit long.

The 19-track Shinga is available on iTunes.

Tracks to download:

  • Natsa
  • Zviri Sei Sei
