Jub Jub Gets 20 Years For Murder

South African Kwaito star Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala  have been sentenced to 20 years in jail for murder.

Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi read sentencing after Maarohanye and  were found guilty on four counts of murder and two of attempted murder, of using drugs, racing on a public road, and of driving under the influence of drugs on October 16 2012.

All in all they were sentenced to 25 years for all the convictions – 4 years for attempted murder, a year for the drugs charge, another one for driving under the influence and another one for racing. The one-year terms will run concurrently which means he will serve 25 years in total.

Earlier in the day both the state and Maarohanye’s lawyers had provided evidence for mitigation in sentencing with the state asking for 40 years and Maarohanye’s lawyers pleading for 570 hours of community service. He also said he would set up a trust to provide for the families of the deceased children.

The magistrate however said that he was not buying it given that over two years had passed without any show of remorse.

Naturally, as expected he will appeal sentencing.
