67% Of South Africans Do Not Trust Foreigners

A rcent survey carried out by Afrobarometer and Idasa has revealed that as many as 6 in 10 South Africans do not trust foreigners.

This will come as little surprise for many given the country’s recent history with xenophobic attacks.

Indications are that it is getting worse. It was 670% in 2008 and had gone up to 67% by last year.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • 44% disagree with providing asylum for foreigners.
  • 32% would take action against a foreigner moving into their neighbourhood
  • 36% would stop foreigners from operating a business in SA
  • 63% believe migration in SA is a disaster

Now, this will be unwanted news for a country battling socio-economic issues at the moment. Perhaps this is just manifestation of such issues, a symptom of a disgruntled society looking for someone to blame for what has gone wrong there.

Whatever it is, it has to be fixed.
